We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Ryosuke Kawahira "Good Night My Friends" at gallery UG Tennoz from 9 February 2024.

Ryosuke Kawahira was selected from the UG Project "KONSHIN-TEN", part of the young artist discovery and development activities that have been ongoing for about 20 years, held in 2019, and this is the fifth year he has been involved as an exclusive artist.

I have sublimated imaginative childhood traumas into unique works of art. Using actual briefs as supports, I draw actual scary dreams and imagined ghosts and monsters. It seems to be an atonement for the fact that I wet my briefs when I was a child because I couldn't go to the toilet.


In recent years, she has started to work more on canvas, and the briefs that used to be her supports have appeared as heroes in her paintings. With the birth and growth of her children, the characters overlap with her own childhood memories and are projected more vividly. At the same time, the work is composed of clear, bold outlines and simple, brightly coloured backgrounds, and furthermore, the comic strip contains elements of the superflat that is gaining attention in contemporary Japanese art.



I wonder where the ghosts and monsters I met in my dreams when I was a child have gone.
As I grew older, my dreams began to become more realistic. I didn't even have scary dreams, I didn't wear briefs anymore, and I didn't wet the bed any more.
The battle of bedwetting has come to an end and peace has finally arrived... 'Goodnight' is a signal for them to fight. Surely, in someone's dreams, the bed-wetting siege may still be raging.
